notes on video

  • Diction are the authors choice of words and Graceland chose their words to connect with their audience
  • their attitude towards their audience is also a definition that describes american literature

ON SELF-RELIANCE PART 5

  • culture diminishes individualism
  • "Society acquires new arts, and loses old instincts"
  •  nothing can bring you peace but yourself

BIG QUESTION

IS LIFE JUST AN ILLUSION/HALLUCINATION?

HOW DO WE KNOW THINGS ARE TRUE OR IN THAT FACT REAL.

DEFINITION OF REAL ACCORDING TO BING SEARCH ENGINES IS-actually existing as a thing or occurring in fact; not imagined or supposed

DARK PATTERNS

OMG! Yes of course this has happened to me! I went online to purchase a new homecoming dress and on the site it said that 81 other people wanted the same dress. I was so worried I wouldn't be able to get the dress I wanted but at the end of it I ended up buying it THAT day. I had to ask my mom to drive me to the bank to put money into my account in order to buy that dress that day. Its kind of messed up that they do that and the next day or even week they probably still had the dress there.

IM IGNITED

I was very intrigued with Luis's Big Question because I myself have had many arguments with my dad about the same topic. I don't consider myself an atheist but I do believe in facts. We don't know that God really created Earth because we weren't there during those times but we have things like the Bible which people say were written during those times and then out of no where everyone decided ok were going to read this and follow the guide lines of it.

I was very intrigued with Juan's Big Question because what he said really got my attention. It is true that the Mandala effect is real but how do we know that it isn't just time travel. Time travel as we know can change anything in the future by just changing something from the past.

LAST CENTURYS WRITING STYLES

*STORY TELLING IS INFLUENCED BY THE TIME THEYRE LIVING*

POLITICAL FORCES
ECONOMIC FORCES

NATUARILISM: EXAGERATED FORCES THAT ACT ON A PERSON WHO DEALS WITH THEM
  •  CANT BE CHANGED
  • NOT SEEN BY THEIR THOUGHTS OR FEELINGS

REALISM:
  • EX. RICHARD CORY
  • KEEPING IT REAL
  • NOT SEEING IT AS GRAND

MODERNISM: GENRE DURING AND AFTER WW1 THAT EMPHASIZED BREAKING RULES

LIMINAL- NOT QUITE WHAT WE USED TO BE BUT NOT YET WHAT WE WILL BECOME

THE NEW WAYS HAVENT BEEN DEFINED
WE DONT KNOW WHAT WE WILL BE DOING IN THE FUTURE

ONE TYPE OF PERSON THAT BREAKS THE RULES IS SOMEONE WHO DOESNT KNOW THE RULES

  • MODERNIST WROTE THE RULES
  • SOMETIMES THEY DIDNT CAPITALIZE THINGS
  • SOMETIMES THEY MADE UP WORDS

TO SIT AND MAKE SENSE OF YOUR THINKING IS ALSO ISOLATING

ARGUE THIS

SYLLOGISM- SIMPLEST FORM OF LOGICAL ARGUMENT
THE "GIVENS" IS LIKE THE PREMISES

EVALUATE SYLLOGISM:
  •  EVALUATE IF THEIR TRUE
  • EVALUATE TO SEE IF THEIR VALID
TRUE MEANS FACCULAY VERIFIED PROOF
THERE IS NO "HER" TRUTH "HIS" TRUTH THERE IS ONLY THE TRUTH

DOES THE CONCLUSION FOLLOW THE PREMISES
EX: AUSTRALIA IS DEALING WITH THE WORSE FIRE
QUEENSLIN IS IN AUSTRALIA BUT IT ISNT VALID BECAUSE WE DONT KNOW THAT IT IS ON FIRE WE JUST KNOW THAT AUSTRALIA IS FIGHTING A FIRE

DEDUCTIVING REASONING:
GONG FROM A GENERAL IDEA TO A SPECIFIC CASE OR EXAMPLE

BAD LOGIC IS EPIDEMIC:
  • LEADS TO MAKING YOU A MUCH EFFECTIVE WRITTER
  • ALSO LEADS TO BEING A VERY COMPASSIONATE PERSON

notes from todays lecture MLK

ETHOS: Elements of messenger that create a sense of credibility (verbal or non-verbal)
-being a church leader (pastor) gave him credibility

PATHOS: he mentions the death of African Americans that touches the hearts of the people

LOGOS: (logic)
fallacy is an error
reason, structure, and formula

He uses diction and syntax in order to connect with his audience such as the phrase he used.
By using "withering injustice" it gives him credibility because African Americans weren't allowed to have any kind of education

Metaphor
imagery
figurative language

he quotes the constitution to give a more powerful speech

"the winter of our discontent" threw out allusions

theme: our history of humanity is based on christian ethic, monstrapution ethic

TODAY I INTERVIEWED AN EXPERT

Today in our AP literature class we did a skype call with Cory Doctorow. He is an internet activist, writer, and a very funny person. We had the opportunity to call him and he told us a lot about the internet and the things he has learned from his research. He used a lot of big words I didn't really understand but overall I had a good idea about the things he talked about. The part that I enjoyed the most of the entire call was when he told us about our own school and how they pay a company so that a lot of sites are blocked on the internet but actually 1% of the time they mess up so out of the entire internet 100 million sites are still able to be seen by students.

REFLECTION OF 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR DURING A PANDEMIC

I LEARNED THAT NOT ONLY IS SCHOOL EXTRA HARD WHEN YOU DONT HAVE GUIDANCE BUT ITS BORING WITHOUT FRIENDS STAYING IN DOORS ALL THE TIME STAR...
